"At the age of seven I was a skilful pickpocket. I could sew neatly, write a tolerable hand, make a curtsey and a correct introduction, dance a little and play simple tunes on the harpsichord."
This was the London life of Felicity Hatton in 1740 - until chance sent her back to the House, first as a pauper, later to become its mistress - a strange eccentric mistress whose choice of husband was as unorthodox as her manner of living.
The House at Sunset is the last volume of Norah Lofts' famous House Trilogy, and traces the fortunes of the men and woman who lived through Georgian, Victorian, and New Elizabethan eras.
The House at Sunset (Audible Audio Edition) Norah Lofts Martyn Read Juliet Prague Soundings Books
I have read many of Ms. Loft's novels, and I find this one of her most thoroughly dismal and depressing ones. In this, various people tell their stories in first person point of view, the stories being linked by the characters' love of the house. This in itself is a depressing theme.SPOILERS
The characters include a little girl pickpocket, an inseperable and antisocial set of twins, several dotty old ladies, and a nasty alcoholic. Events include jilting, wife abuse, a triple murder, abortion, all kinds of greed and corruption, the needless death of one of the few attractive and newly married young characters, and an unconvincing happy ending for the house rather than for any of the characters. Greed and violence abound.
END OF SPOILERS
The House at Old Vine is a splendid book, and The Town House has good moments. Stick with them, unless you can't stand to leave the house without knowing its sad end.

The House at Sunset (Audible Audio Edition) Norah Lofts Martyn Read Juliet Prague Soundings Books Reviews
One of the best English writers. Norah Lofts can tell a tale. Usually the stories revolve around a house and you fall in love with the house as well as the countryside and the times. Can’t put the her books down and wish they never ended. But of course with a trilogy the reader is in for a great ride. Her characterizations are rich. She really knows human nature. Very juicy in an old English way.
I read and reread these books on a regular basis. Thank you so much for bringing them to us in format! Norah Lofts was prolific, so bringing her books back is a big job, I know, but it is so appreciated! Thank you again!
Not as enthralling as the two previous books in the series, probably because the setting is contemporary and not quite so fascinating as Tudor times. Well written in the same vein as the others told from various points of view. Well worth reading to find out the fate of an old, old house which by all accounts is by now deemed condemned and ripe for demolition.
This whole trilogy was intriguing. I couldn't stop reading; and by the time I read The House at Sunset, I still had not grown bored with the stories of each of the featured characters. I was sorry when it all ended.
This is an old favorite, which I find myself reading again and again. I too wish to thank for bringing this captivating trilogy to . This last book of the series is as well written, constructed and thought out with the same mastery as the first and second. One gets the feeling that they are living the experience, rather than reading it.
It will always remain a favorite of mine.
This is a great book by one of my favorite authors, but this copy was in no way ACCEPTABLE. Many pages were loose, although none were missing. The second I opened the book, it fell apart. I threw it away. Very disappointing. The seller should have thrown this book away instead of selling it.
This is the third in a series of books by Norah Lofts. As the other books by Lofts are, it's wonderfully written. You can just picture yourself there! Highly recommend getting this third part if you've read the first two and would like to see what happened to this wonderful old home throughout the years.
