The long awaited prequel to the Award Winning Chronicles of an Imperial Legionary Officer series that started with the bestselling military fantasy book Stiger’s Tigers. A nobleman from an infamous family, Ben Stiger finds himself freshly assigned to Third Legion, Seventh Company as a lowly lieutenant in the opening stages of war between the Empire and the Kingdom of the Rivan. Third Legion has been tasked with pursuing a retreating Rivan army back to the border where the Empire can take the fight into enemy territory. However, a major obstacle stands in Third Legion’s path the river Hana. The crossing is sure to be contested and dangerous. Should Third Legion fail to force a crossing, the entire campaign could grind to a disastrous halt. This is Stiger’s first military appointment. Inexperienced, young and unsure of himself, Stiger is ostracized by his fellow lieutenants. Worse, he’s been placed under the command of an incompetent officer. With life and reputation on the line, he must learn to understand men far beneath his station and lead them into battle. Stiger struggles not only against the enemy, but against his family's history and his own side to prove himself worthy of serving the empire he loves and earning the respect of the men he leads. Set amidst the backdrop of an epic war, there are greater forces at work than the young Stiger can even begin to imagine, setting him on the dangerous and lonely path of destiny.
Stiger Tales of the Seventh Volume 1 Marc Alan Edelheit Books
Fans of Stiger's Tigers can rejoice! Not quite an "origin story", but here we are introduced to a young Lieutenant Ben Stiger that is still wet behind the ears. As Stiger learns what it takes to be a leader of a combat troop, he also learns what it means to a leader. Building a relationship with his senior enlisted only helps him grow into the part that he was (quite literally) born to play, but earns him the respect of those he is destined to lead.If I had this in hardback, it would sit alongside Starship Troopers as one of my favorites among military fiction.

Stiger Tales of the Seventh Volume 1 Marc Alan Edelheit Books Reviews
I got this free and I am glad it was free. Honestly, I don’t know if it’s worth the actual price. I am of the impression this is part of a larger universe and not the best intro to that universe.
The good
-The action in this book is easy to read and follow.
-Stiger was interesting to see develop as a character.
The bad
-I knew this was fictional but it took me roughly a third of the way in to realize this is set in an alternate version of Rome. This is why I say it must be part of a larger universe (and the author claims as well at the end of the book) but its never stated but more an impression you get. If there had been something at the beginning letting you know this is part of a larger universe, it would have been better.
-There is no consistency with time. It’s quiet clear that the character of Ben Stiger has been in the legion for nearly two months and by the way he describes the time between the first skirmish to the forest night battle, its been a week. But when the end of the book, which is clearly nearly a month after the book starts, he says that the time for his joining the legions are only a few weeks, aka, roughly a month at most.
-The main antagonist of this story, Captain Catheues, is stupid merely for the sake of being stupid. As an implied veteran of the Legions, he shouldn’t be so stupid.
-The author believes that men can march up to 40 miles in a single day. The story begins with Stiger arriving at a camp depot that’s 20 miles away from camp and he’s afraid of not getting back the same day. He then expects that they can move 20 miles in a few hours, arrive for battle and be able to fight several fierce hand to hand fights. It’s hard for soldiers to make more than 15 miles even on a good day, and to expect them to get into battle almost immediately is absurd.
Summary an interesting story where you have to really suspend disbelief.

First, undestand that I really like this series, I find the idea of a Roman based fantasy series a pleasant change from the usual medieval based adventures. Add to this an interesting character (one I can only assume is very loosely based on Caesar) who displays all of the arrogance and hard hearted genius of a Roman Legionnaire, yet also characterizes the idea of genius as 99% prespiration.
Second, this latest book provides us insight into the earlier introduced later character by introducing him as a young man of tainted antecedents beating his head against the wall of a military bureaucracy. It shows him grow as he struggles and eventually shows him start to become the hardened professional of the first stories.
Finally, I like the world Marc has outlined, and feel that this story goes a long way to coloring it in. I feel the story is more like seeing living pages in a history than many series, with me hanging on waiting for the next.
Marc's writing is incredible. I devoured this book as soon as I got it. His description of the young officer and enlisted NCO relationship is so incredibly accurate and rewarding to read about. He has this magical understanding of the combat of the legionaries that is so vivid and enjoyable to read. I feel like I am right there with the characters, experiencing what they are experiencing. I love reading about this era of honor and triumph in battle and Marc hits the target and never fails to keep the reader engaged. I am so looking forward to his next books.
Marc, if you're reading this, I implore you to add some maps of the battlefields and how they look in your mind, maybe at the beginning of each chapter you could expose the fog of war a little more each chapter so that the reader sees what Stiger is seeing on the field. Your writing allows me to see the image of the battle, but I love having a map to reference to keep me focused on the battle lines and the positioning of the troops. These type of battles are so important to understand the troop positioning to help the reader understand the importance of not being routed during combat. I think ultimately your reader will come to appreciate the great challenges that your heroes are overcoming.
Please continue to write your great adventures, I simply can't wait for your next book(s). Oh, and thank you for sharing this adventure with me and your readers. It really is awesome.
