Mr Judd's depth of historical knowledge of Tennessee history is vast, yet he is able to weave it seamlessly into his stories while creating great fictional characters. I really enjoyed this book, while at the same time learned so much about Eastern Tennessee's role in the civil war. It put into perspective and gave me understanding why my ancestors from McMinn and Polk Counties who fought on the Union side did so in the Kentucky and Ohio Militia's. This series gave me a greater appreciation for my ancestors and the hardships they endured by being pro-Union in Confederate controlled East Tennessee.Thanks again Cameron Judd for helping me understand the life and times of my Tennessee ancestors.

I enjoyed this book very much, as I have many other books by Mr. Judd. This is the first of his that I've read in Format, and proofreading is sorely needed. There are numerous occurrences of incorrect or missing words which distracts from the flow of the story. I'm certain that this occurred during conversion to electronic format, as I never encountered this in the printed books. Otherwise, a terrific novel by an excellent author.
I am interested in civil war stories which take place in the North Carolina mountains. This is an interesting book.
A great book.
It follows very closely books written just after the civil war. The book shows as closely as anything I have read the horror of the civil War in the mountains of Ky, TN and NC.
I liked it. The story really held my interest. I read a chapter and sometimes two every night before going to sleep. Very good plot development based on historical events. Thank you Mr. Judd.
This book would be interesting to anyone interested in the history of the civil war and early life in America. The characters come alive and you feel like you know them. Can't wait to read the next one in this trilogy.
I loved the characters in this book. It is so hard to believe that such atrocities were committed by military personnel, to actually torture women and children just to find out where their husbands were hiding. Looking forward to reading the next one in this series.
