Believing that her love would have the power to free him from the clutches of his internal demons, she declared herself his savior and wedded the boy and his bottle. For twenty-six years she cuddled him, cried for him and watered his vodka. On the last day of his tempestuous love affair with booze, she froze in horror as shattered glass sprayed around her and hot oil from a frying pan arced toward his only challenger, their older daughter. ************************** A memoir, anonymously authored to protect her family, this story endlessly repeats itself in varying relationships throughout our society. The statistics are frightening 50% of the children of alcoholics marry alcoholics; more than that number become addicts themselves. But sometimes the chain is broken. Sometimes there is recovery without a glass.

Without a Glass Valerie Skyla 9781481116978 Books Reviews
If you have had alcoholism in your life this book is excellent to read. You will relate to many scenarios the author has written.
Ok.
very sad, real story of what it is like to fight addiction! a human tale...
A good book - certainly tells us tons about drinking to excess.
I thoroughly enjoyed your book. I am an alcoholic married to a alcoholic. I think if I want to keep my white knight I had better start going to Al Anon. Thank you.
As a recovering alcoholic of 22 years & counselor at a rehab, I felt it definitely could have been "richer." The emotional, physical & spiritual bottom one hits, in which the pain is indescribable, was not mentioned. I do understand though that it was from a loved ones point of view. Also having grown up in an alcoholic family, I do not think it touched upon how much it truly effects the kids. By the grace of God, my 14 year old son has never seen me take a drink. Think the book could have added some education. It is ALWAYS needed. Nice that it shows recovery IS possible. Liked the ALANON part. So many of the families of my patients, despise ALANON. Decent read.
This is the kind of story that makes you feel better for reading it. It is a beautiful portrayal of a relationship that endured through many challenges, brought about by Matt's addictions and Val's enabling. I loved the honesty of Val where she accepts her role in the relationship, through to its repair 20 years later. We can all take something from this book that we could put into our own relationships with those around of us. What I learned was not taking on other people's issues as being my fault. I loved her line where if Matt lost his temper over something, instead of old behavior of thinking it was her fault, she would say "I am sorry you feel that way. All in all, I just found it an easy, and enjoyable read.
